Description of the assignment

SCOPE OF POSITION

The Electrical Engineer will play a key role in the design and development of ruggedized electronics for cone penetrometer systems used in geotechnical and civil engineering applications. This position focuses on creating reliable hardware solutions for challenging field environments, integrating sensors, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, field-ready products.


ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

Design

  • Create schematics and PCB layouts for embedded systems using tools like Altium or Eagle.
  • Develop analog and digital circuits for accurate, reliable sensor integration.
  • Create block diagrams and mixed-signal system architectures.
  • Establish power distribution, grounding, and signal integrity plans.
  • Develop system-level hardware architecture, including block diagrams, power trees, and signal maps.


Sensor Integration

  • Work with load cells, strain gauges, and other geotechnical sensors to optimize performance.
  • Ensure robust signal conditioning and data acquisition for field applications.


Collaboration

  • Partner with mechanical, firmware, and robotics engineers to deliver fully integrated solutions.
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews and contribute to system-level architecture decisions.


Prototyping & Testing

  • Develop and test prototypes, confirming designs through both laboratory and field evaluations.
  • Run environmental and durability assessments to ensure products meet ruggedness standards.
  • Set up and execute bench tests using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and precise measurement instruments.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to signal integrity and analog performance.


Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure designs meet electrical safety standards and best practices for harsh environments.
  • Document design processes, testing protocols, and integration procedures.

  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Maintain clear communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Profile

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training in British Columbia (or eligibility to register)
  • Progression towards a Professional Designation is required
  • Experience Requirements & Technical Requirements

Experience in electrical hardware development.

  • Strong expertise in schematics, PCB design, and layout (Altium, Eagle, or similar tools).
  • Solid understanding of analog and digital circuit design for sensor integration.
  • Hands-on experience with load cells, strain gauges, and instrumentation circuits
  • Experience designing electronics for harsh environments (ruggedized and low-power designs) is an asset.
  • Strong experience in analog circuit design (PGAs, instrumentation amplifiers, filtering).
  • Hands-on with high-resolution ADCs and low-noise design principles.
  • Proficiency in Cortex-M4/M7 MCU design and external memory interfaces.
  • Solid understanding of SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, USB and related hardware considerations.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet hardware design and PHY integration.
  • Solid understanding of PCB layout for mixed-signal systems.
  • Experience with benchtop testing and troubleshooting.
  • EMI/EMC design practices.
  • Experience with Signal Integrity (SI) and Power Integrity (PI) analysis
  • Battery-powered system knowledge.

 

Technical Skill Requirements

  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics.
  • System-level design and trade-off analysis.
  • Strong technical documentation skills
  • Experience with at least one of the following: Altium Designer, Solidworks Electrical.
  • Comfortable with standard electrical assembly tools (wire cutters, wire strippers, crimp tooling, soldering iron, heat gun)
  • Experience in production and/or manufacturing engineering is an asset

Soft Skill Requirements

  • Strong work ethic and represent the company in a professional manner
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Possess a strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting with minimal supervision.
