Description of the assignment
As an Interior Structure Construction Field Engineer on the $3.3B Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel Expansion Project (HRBT), you will support the construction of all interior tunnel structures. Reporting to the Tunnel Interior Structures Lead, you assist Superintendents with on‑site activities including planning, work plans, shop drawings, coordination, and supervision.
PRINCIPAL/ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Quality Assurance & HSE
- Conduct and document routine quality and safety inspections throughout construction.
- Enforce compliance with company safety policies and federal/state/local regulations.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and incident reporting.
- Promote a culture of safety and proactively identify unsafe conditions or behaviors.
Planning and Work Preparation
- Prepare detailed Work Plans and ensure compliance with site requirements and internal approvals
- Interpret construction drawings, shop drawings, and technical instructions.
- Participate in the development of construction schedules and activity sequencing.
Field Supervision and Execution
- Assist Superintendents in day‑to‑day field operations for efficient and safe execution of interior tunnel structures.
- Monitor work progress, identify deviations, and implement corrective measures.
- Ensure all activities meet project quality standards and Health & Safety guidelines.
Coordination & Interface Management
- Coordinate with suppliers, manufacturers, subcontractors, and internal departments as required.
- Interface with mechanical, electrical, ventilation, and fire-life-safety teams for integrated tunnel systems.
- Support resolution of design discrepancies; collaborate with designers on technical issues.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare daily/weekly reports, progress updates, and productivity records.
- Maintain accurate field logs, inspections, and as‑built documentation.
- Track materials, quantities, and work activities to support cost control.
Productivity & Continuous Improvement
- Support the Construction Lead in monitoring team performance and propose productivity improvements.
- Identify recurring construction issues and contribute to solutions improving work methods.
Cost & Resource Management
- Participate in budget preparation, cost estimation, and resource planning.
- Ensure proper identification of tools, equipment, and materials needed on site.
Profile
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management or a related field required.
- 1+ years minimum of construction engineering experience on heavy civil construction projects required.
- Ability to interpret and apply construction drawings, standards, and technical instructions.
- Strong problem‑solving abilities and technical judgement.
- Knowledge of safety policies (OSHA30) and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge with AutoCAD, and preferably BIM tools (Navisworks, Revit).
- Strong command of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
- Time‑management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities.
- Leadership potential and capacity to support field teams.
Preferred:
- Preferred experience in tunnel roadworks and tunnel structural construction.
- Preferred proficiency in project management tools (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project).
Physical Demands & Work Conditions
- Occasional bending, stooping, twisting, crawling, and kneeling.
- Frequent climbing of ladders and work in confined tunnel spaces.
- Exposure to dust, noise, heat, or cold depending on site conditions.
- Variable hours include night shifts and weekends depending on project needs.
