Description of the assignment

Main Purpose of the Job

The role will involve a combination of office / remote working and visits to live sites at a frequency to be agreed to discuss progress / programme submissions with our project team(s). The role will be split between the preparation of programmes for live jobs and the preparation of programmes for inclusion within our tender submissions where a high level of detail is required.

 

Key Tasks

Pre-Construction Stage

  • Responsible at tender stage working alongside the responsible estimator / bid manager to develop a programme which is compliant with the planning procedures
  • Identifying planning scope, major constraints and contract requirements
  • Identifying major quantities and factors affecting the programme including Access and Key Dates and interfaces with 3rd parties etc
  • Establishing and agreeing with Operations team the construction outputs and agreed working hours with appropriate Estimator / Bid Manager
  • Establishing and agreeing with Operations and Bid Team key methods of construction and sequencing as well as levels of resourcing.
  • Producing and documenting the planning deliverables including programmes, planning philosophy, presentations and reports as required by the tender

Operational Stage

  • Developing the initial contract programme for acceptance, issuing to all internal parties for review including interfacing with third parties to identify and resolve issues and producing any required resource and/or cost loading / programme narrative as required
  • Ensuring that the Contract Programme is produced, managed and maintained in accordance with the planning procedures and contract requirements
  • The issue and communication of the Contract Programme to the Project Lead for onward issue to Client and Project Team
  • Ensuring that all other project planning and programming necessary for the execution of the contract is properly undertaken. This will include supporting the commercial team in terms of showing the programme impacts associated with EWNCs and CEs associated with NEC 3 and NEC 4 contracts for example

Business Wide

  • Develop planning processes for the business in liaison with the site teams
  • Improve understanding across the business of the importance of programmes and change management

 

Physical Working Environment

Hybrid flexible working to be agreed with line manager which can include Working from Home and/or our fixed premises offices in Leeds alongside visits to sites.

Profile

Knowledge/Experience and Behaviours required

  • Operational experience of construction projects (i.e. site engineer/site agent) together with previous experience of planning services in small to medium sized projects within the construction and engineering industry
  • Must have knowledge and experience of planning: Critical Path understanding – not just using software but knowing why activities drive the project/ Logical sequencing of works
  • Must be proficient in planning software such as MS Project, P6 or similar
  • Knowledge of various conditions of contract (we work predominantly under ICC/ NEC forms of contract) including being able to demonstrate compensation event/ variation EOT entitlement
  • An understanding of various forms of tender documents, contract documents and specifications
  • An ability to be able to explain the programme and changes to Clients/ non-planners
  • Must have good commercial and contractual knowledge – delay analysis/ float ownership/ supporting claims with clear cause and effect logic
  • A good understanding of risk and opportunity management with particular reference to planning programming
  • An understanding of various methods of planning, programming and progress monitoring
  • An understanding of the construction market, methods of construction, plant, equipment and labour requirements
  • An OND/HND in a relevant subject is desirable, as is Professional membership of one or more of the following: RICS/CIOB/RIBA/ICE/CIBSE
  • A proven track record in problem solving
  • Attention to detail
  • A proven track record in successfully managing change on challenging projects
  • The ability to efficiently manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Excellent written and verbal communicator with interpersonal skills to liaise with and influence Clients and internal teams
  • Full UK driving licence – role will include travel to contracts and Clients across UK
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and with own initiative and be able to adapt to changing Client and business demands
  • Demonstrates the ability to delegate tasks appropriately to prioritise workload and progress contracts effectively
  • Ability to coach and develop others – including leading programme workshops and explaining complex logic to non-planners
  • Must be a team player that has strong influencing skills that can gain buy-in/ respect from the site teams. Actively contributes to collective success by sharing knowledge, ideas, and expertise with others
  • Must live the Soil Engineering Values and demonstrate a passion and excitement for their work
