Description of the assignment

  As a Temporary Works Engineer on the $3.3BN Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel Expansion Project (HRBT) in Virginia, you will support the project through providing calculations and designs for structures such as, false work, shoring and cofferdams as per the set project and QHSE standards.  You will also provide support for means and methods, and design for constructability.  

 The Hampton Roads Connector Partners JV (HRCP) consisting of Flatiron, Dragados USA and VINCI, has been selected to construct the $3.3BN Design Build project –the largest civil construction contract ever awarded by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).   

 The project scope across a 9-mile section of the I-64 will include: a new 3.5-mile bridge-tunnel crossing that will accommodate a total of 8 lanes of capacity across the water, replacement of the existing marine approach bridges and the addition of a third lane on I-64 in each direction. The twin 45’ diameter 1.5-mile tunnels will be bored by TBM, creating the second largest TBM tunnel opening for a TBM in North America. The project is expected to continue to the end of 2025.

Profile

  • Perform calculations and prepare plans for temporary and permanent structures such as formwork, falsework, cofferdams and other support of excavation structures, and specialized material lifting and handling devices. 
  • Coordinate design and constructability efforts with the project group to deliver designs within budget, time, and quality constraints. 
  • Design, model (if required), and stamp the required temporary works. 
  • Perform constructability reviews to improve structural details of temporary works. 
  • Evaluate and approve manufacturer’s equipment, subcontractor’s and consultants’ proposals, data, and reports on permanent and temporary works for conformance as soon as sign and seal are required.  
  • Maintain engineering records, lists, and schedules for engineering works, ensuring necessary approvals are in place to proceed with design. 
  • Prepare written reports and submittals for temporary and permanent works designs including calculations and drawings. 
  • Supervise the preparation of written reports and submittals for temporary works designs prepared by other Engineers. 
  • May coordinate work of drafters, designers, technical assistants, engineers, subcontractors, including work assignments, scheduling, and review under limited supervision of the engineering manager.

Required Qualifications:

  •  Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 3+ years related experience in the design and/or construction sector for heavy civil projects. 
  • Excellent knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Bentley platforms in both 2D and 3D is required.   
  • Experience in structural analysis software such as RISA-3D, Mathcad etc. is preferred. 
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering techniques 

Preferred Qualifications:

  •  Strong understanding of construction materials, methods, and techniques, including formwork systems, shoring methods, and scaffold design.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

  • Comprehensive understanding of tunnel construction methods, techniques, and challenges, including tunnel excavation, ground support systems, and temporary works required during tunneling operations.

  • Knowledge of temporary works design principles, including formwork, falsework, shoring, bracing, and scaffolding systems used to support tunnel excavation, lining installation, and other construction activities.
  •  Understanding of geotechnical principles and soil mechanics relevant to tunnel construction, including soil behavior, ground stability, groundwater conditions, and excavation support methods.

  • Proficiency in performing structural analysis and calculations to verify the stability and strength of temporary works structures, using appropriate software tools and engineering principles.
