• Job Title: Nuclear Safety Engineer

• Provide expert nuclear safety advice, assurance and independent challenge across major infrastructure and nuclear programmes, ensuring compliance with governance frameworks, safety standards and regulatory requirements.
• Act as the organisation’s nuclear safety subject matter expert, supporting programme teams with the interpretation and application of nuclear safety principles, policies and industry best practice.
• Lead and contribute to nuclear safety assessments, design reviews, technical assurance activities and readiness reviews, ensuring safety risks are identified, understood and effectively managed.
• Review safety cases, technical submissions, design changes and project documentation, providing robust challenge and recommendations to support informed decision-making.
• Work collaboratively with programme teams, customers, Design Authority representatives and supply chain partners to ensure nuclear safety requirements are embedded throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of nuclear safety governance, assurance processes, management arrangements and decision-making frameworks.
• Identify, assess and escalate nuclear safety risks, issues, gaps and emerging concerns, helping to drive effective mitigation strategies and continuous improvement.
• Provide technical guidance, reports, assurance findings and recommendations to senior stakeholders, supporting safe, compliant and successful programme delivery.
• Advise on the appropriate application of proportionate, risk-based controls, ensuring effective governance without unnecessary assurance burden.
• Support tender evaluations, supplier engagement and technical discussions where specialist nuclear safety expertise is required.
• Contribute to the development of organisational nuclear safety capability through mentoring, coaching, knowledge sharing and stakeholder engagement.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, promoting a positive nuclear safety culture and collaborative working environment.
• Champion best practice and lessons learned, driving innovation and continual improvement across nuclear safety and assurance activities.

Position Requirements: 

Essential Experience

• Significant experience in nuclear engineering, nuclear safety, nuclear infrastructure or defence nuclear operations.
• Experience working with nuclear plant, submarine systems, reactor plant, nuclear support systems or nuclear safety implicated infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of nuclear systems, safety functions, hazard control and the risks associated with design, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance or modification of nuclear-related assets.
• Experience assessing the nuclear safety significance of technical issues, design information, changes, concessions, deviations or delivery outputs.
• Experience applying proportionate, risk-informed judgement in a nuclear safety context.
• Experience reviewing technical documentation, safety case evidence, commissioning evidence, quality records or management system outputs.
• Experience providing nuclear safety advice, challenge and assurance to senior stakeholders, programme teams or delivery organisations.
• Experience working in complex, multi-disciplinary engineering environments where nuclear safety, technical performance, cost, schedule and deliverability must be balanced.
• Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to explain nuclear safety risk clearly to non-specialists.

Desirable Experience

• Experience within the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, MOD estate, authorised / licensed sites or other defence nuclear environments.
• Experience of build, commissioning, handover, operation, maintenance, repair or modification of nuclear systems or facilities.
• Experience working with or supporting an Authorisee, Licensee, Design Authority, Regulator or equivalent nuclear governance body.
• Experience supporting nuclear safety implicated infrastructure programmes, including requirements, design review, assurance, handover or safety case interfaces.
• Experience supporting organisational change, governance improvement or intelligent client capability in a nuclear safety environment.

Qualifications:

Essential

• Degree-level qualification in engineering, science, nuclear technology or another relevant technical discipline.
• Chartered status with a relevant professional body or working towards chartered status.
• Strong technical understanding of nuclear systems, safety functions, defence-in-depth, hazard control and nuclear safety risk.
• Ability to judge whether an SSC, design change, document, deviation or delivery output is nuclear safety significant.
• Ability to review and challenge technical evidence, safety case claims, commissioning evidence and assurance records.
• Strong understanding of proportionality, risk-informed decision-making and evidence-based assurance in a nuclear safety context.
• Security Check clearance, or ability to obtain it.
