Description of the assignment

What is the project?

The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment program involves designing and building a new deep-water intake in Lake Ontario to improve the plant's cooling system. This will involve:

-         A 1.5 km-long tunnel, built by a pressurized TBM (10.15 m diameter slurry TBM);

-         Two vertical shafts (onshore and offshore);

-         An offshore modular intake structure, resting on the lake bed.

The project is distinguished by its proximity to an active nuclear site, requiring rigorous standards of safety, planning and coordination.

What you will do:

The Environmental Coordinator is responsible for supporting the implementation of environmental plans, permits, strategies, policies and procedures. They will ensure adherence to environmental regulations and establish the carbon footprint assessment of the project.

Concretely, your tasks will be:

  • Participate in the implementation of environmental management plans and support permit applications 
  • Support the proper implementation of environmental strategies, policies, and procedures 
  • Ensure the accurate integration of environmental requirements into relevant documentation 
  • Monitor performance indicators, and support the obtainment of environmental objectives by proposing recommendations and best practices 
  • Establish the carbon footprint assessment of the project with dedicated stakeholders (estimating, design, construction) 
  • Ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations, permits, and standards throughout all project phases, including monitoring air quality, water quality, and noise levels 
  • Assist in the resolution of on-site environmental issues and emergencies  
  • Ensure environmental best practices, regulations, and protocols are followed by all stakeholders  
  • Conduct regular audits regarding environmental standards 
  • Follow the environmental monitoring programs to track environmental performance indicators and ensure continuous improvement.  
  • Support the development and implementation of emergency response plans for environmental incidents, such as spills or leaks, ensuring prompt and effective mitigation measures.  

Profile

  • A bachelor’s degree with specialization in planning, environmental planning, environmental assessment, geography or another related discipline 
  • 5 years of experience in an environmental role 
  • Experience with the implementation of environmental management systems  
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 standards and QHSE regulations applicable to large construction projects 
  • Experience in tunneling or underground works is an asset 
  • Experience working on projects with high-risk environments (nuclear, offshore, or similar) is an asset 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
