Description of the assignment

Help shape one of New Zealand’s most significant marine infrastructure projects.

HEB is delivering the Waitohi Ferry Redevelopment Project in Picton, a landmark project that will support the next generation of rail-enabled Cook Strait ferries. This complex marine infrastructure programme includes the construction of a new ferry wharf, installation of a new linkspan, and major terminal interface upgrades, helping strengthen one of New Zealand’s most important transport connections between the North and South Islands.

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Manager to lead environmental and sustainability performance across this high-profile project. Reporting to the Project Director, you will provide strategic and practical environmental leadership, ensuring compliance, environmental excellence and sustainable outcomes across all stages of delivery. This is a fixed term role until 2029.

What you'll be doing

  • Leading environmental management and compliance across the project
  • Driving implementation and continuous improvement of environmental management systems
  • Managing consent obligations, environmental monitoring, audits and reporting
  • Building strong relationships with clients, regulators, iwi, consultants and project stakeholders
  • Coordinating ecological and specialist environmental programmes
  • Leading environmental incident investigations and risk management activities
  • Driving sustainability initiatives and environmental best practice across project operations
  • Mentoring and developing a team of environmental professionals and specialists

Profile

 What you'll bring

  • A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Planning, Ecology or a related discipline
  • Strong experience in environmental management within construction, infrastructure or a similar industry
  • Proven success managing consent compliance and environmental risk
  • Experience leading teams and coordinating specialist consultants and contractors
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach with the ability to influence project teams and drive positive outcomes
