Description of the assignment

Package Manager – Environmental Engineering

Hours: 37.5 hours
Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
Hybrid working: 2/3 days on site, 2 days remote.
Arrangement: Permanent.

Purpose Of The Role:

The Environmental Engineer will be matrixed to the JDR programme from the UKAEA Quality, Safety, Health, Environment, Risk & Assurance group. The role will provide expert environmental support to the JDR programme, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, alignment with UKAEA standards, and delivery of environmental objectives throughout the decommissioning lifecycle.

 

Responsibilities: 

The person undertaking this role shall be responsible to:

  • Provide expert guidance on the JDR decommissioning strategy, including phasing, prioritization, and critical decisions to secure environmental benefits.
  • Develop and maintain the Environmental Management Strategy for assigned projects, ensuring alignment with UKAEA standards and ISO14001.
  • Ensure development, implementation, and compliance with technical processes and operating procedures during pre-construction and construction phases.
  • Author and deliver key environmental documents such as Regulatory Interface Arrangements, Radiological Monitoring Strategy, Carbon Management Strategy, and Sustainability Strategy.
  • Lead the development of the Environment Case for design and decommissioning activities in coordination with the Safety Case team.
  • Act as the intelligent customer for environmental discipline, defining scope and procurement strategy for outsourced environmental studies.
  • Ensure environmental requirements are embedded into engineering design and execution through BAT workshops, ENVID processes, and deliverable planning.
  • Identify and assess environmental risks for the JDR programme, develop mitigation strategies, and escalate issues to senior leadership when necessary.
  • Work closely with contractors, demolition teams, and facility managers to ensure safe and compliant execution considering radiological, COSHH, and industrial hazards.
  • Provide integration across programme areas to optimize resources, avoid overlaps, and ensure environmental aspects are consistently addressed.
  • Deliver training and upskilling sessions for teams on environmental legislation, standards, and best practices.
  • Validate outputs of environmental studies, monitor compliance, and contribute to the performance evaluation of service providers

Profile

Essential Experience & Qualifications: 


The individual assigned to this role is expected to meet the following criteria:

  • Expert understanding of environmental and sustainability legislation, government standards, and regulatory frameworks.
  • In-depth knowledge of ISO14001 Environmental Management System, including certification processes.
  • Familiarity with Best Available Techniques (BAT) and Environmental Impact Identification (ENVID) methodologies.
  • Knowledge of radiation requirements under Environment Agency permits.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and associated compliance requirements.
  • Extensive experience in environmental engineering within large, complex programmes.
  • Proven track record in decommissioning, demolition, or facility decommissioning environments.
  • Experience embedding environmental requirements into engineering design and execution.
  • Strong background in project management principles and stakeholder coordination.
  • Ability to validate environmental studies and manage performance of service providers.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and coordination abilities, both verbal and written.
  • Confident influencer capable of producing clear, persuasive reports.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for building relationships across diverse teams and levels.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and transfer knowledge proactively

Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, environmental and/or engineering qualifications preferred.

  • D1: Decommissioning Strategy & Advisory (Months 1-2 and updated quarterly)
  • D2 : Environmental Management Framework (Months 2-4 for initial drafts and final approval by Month 6)
  • D3 : Technical Governance & Compliance (Months 3-5)
  • D4: Environmental Case & Risk Management (initial draft by Month 4 and final approval by month 7)
  • D5 : Integration & Stakeholder Coordination (Continuous through contract)
  • D6 : Capability Building & Performance Assurance (Training by month 6, validation reports ongoing through contract)
